Christmas Mulled Wine Glühwein Recipe

German Christmas Mulled Wine Glühwein Recipe

Glühwein is a traditional German Christmas drink made by heating red wine with whole spices, citrus, and sugar. The name comes from the cozy, glowing feeling of warmth inside you after drinking it, or from the glowing hot irons historically used to heat the liquid. It sounds like "glue-vine" when pronouncing it in English.

Ingredients:

1 bottle (750 ml) fruity red wine

1 cup (240 ml) brandy

1 cup (200 g) sugar

1 medium orange, sliced

1 medium lemon, sliced

1/8 tsp. (0.6 ml) ground nutmeg

2 cinnamon sticks (3 inches / 7.5 cm)

1/2 tsp. (2.5 ml) whole allspice

1/2 tsp. (2.5 ml) aniseed

1/2 tsp. (2.5 ml) whole peppercorns

3 whole cloves

Optional garnishes: orange slices, star anise, and additional cinnamon sticks

Directions:

1. In a large saucepan, combine the wine, brandy, sugar, orange, lemon, and nutmeg.

2. Place remaining spices on a double thickness of cheesecloth.

3. Gather corners of cloth to enclose spices; tie securely with string. Place in pan.

4. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.

5. Reduce heat; simmer gently, covered, for 20 minutes.

6. Transfer to a covered container and cool slightly. Refrigerate, covered, overnight.

7. Strain wine mixture into a large saucepan, discarding fruit and spice bag; reheat.

8. Serve warm. Garnish as desired.
